Audi's New Twin-Turbo 4.0-liter V-8

Two of the most impressive V-8s to come around, um, ever, are GM’s supercharged 6.2-liter (ZR1, ZL1, CTS-V) and AMG’s twin-turbo 5.5-liter (E63, CLS63, SL63, etc.). The former, known as LS9 or LSA, offers 556 to 638 hp and 551 to 604 lb-ft of torque, while the latter, called M157, achieves 518 to 550 hp and 516 to 590 lb-ft. Both are refined, euphonious, and a pleasure to pilot, even when not motoring at Mach speed. To this short list, I add one more: Audi’s new twin-turbo 4.0-liter, aka EA 82.
I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the EA in the new 420-hp, 406-lb-ft S6 and S7, and the 520-hp, 481-lb-ft S8, and, well, whoa. Salaciously smooth and rife with spine-tingling revs and rumbles, the EA was also nabbed for duty in the Bentley Continental GT (500 hp, 487 lb-ft). But so far, it’s the S8 that’s blown us away. Why? Try 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and the quarter in 11.8 at 118.3 mph. Yes, it’s that quick.
To get a better understanding of the EA, I asked the man with the answers — Juergen Koenigstedt, head of Audi’s V-8/V-10 engines.
RK: Did you decide from the start that the new-gen Audi V-8 was going to be a 4.0-liter turbo?
JK: It was very clear that an eight-cylinder would have 4.0-liter displacement, because we have normally 500 cubic-centimeters volume in each cylinder — as in our 2.0-liter turbo engines — and it makes sense to make it in this way. We had a lot of discussion what would be the right way to have the turbo — outside or in the vee. That was a big question at the beginning and, from our point of view, this position of the turbocharger in the vee has so much advantage. You have very short way from the turbo over the intercooler into the engine. A small volume and, therefore, the throttle response is very good. Turbo lag is none.

RK: Was there any discussion about putting this new 4.0-liter in the refreshed Audi R8?
JK: Every time you have this discussion, because a few people love naturally aspirated engine with high revs and other people love turbocharged engines. From my point of view, for a real super sports car, the naturally aspirated engine, with this unbelievable throttle response and sound, is crying the high tune — that’s the R8.
RK: From the start of the Audi 4.0-liter project to now, how long was the process?
JK: Normally, we have two phases. One is the concept phase. This starts nearly four years before a project goes to start of production. And this concept phase, we have roughly 15 months. And after 15 months, you have everything together. You know how the engine will be, and you have your variables, your financial variables and so on. And then comes the decision. OK, is it good enough to make the development of the serious engines? In this case, you can say three and a half years.
RK: And how many test kilometers?
JK: I would say 10 million kilometers.

RK: Did you know from the start that Bentley would also be using the 4.0?
JK: No. It came a little bit later. Roughly a year.
RK: Were you happy that Bentley would be using the engine?
JK: At the beginning, no, because we have enough to do. And the Continental platform is different from our platforms. And at the beginning, we were a little bit afraid in comparison to the 12-cylinder engine. A 4.0-liter, is it enough for a Bentley? We had doubts at the beginning. But after a few months, when we drove the first engine in the Bentley, nobody imagines that it is a 4.0-liter engine.

Garage Built Show Stopper

Wow what can I say this car is amazing! Love the BBS rims

"It's always so inspiring-showcasing builds such as this one. What started off as literally a huge piece of outdated metal turned into one of the cleanest all around rides that we have ever featured before. Hell, we would go as far as saying that it's one of the cleanest Rabbit's we've ever laid our eyes on! It could be because it obviously does look amazing or perhaps it's because of seeing just how far it has come since Joe started the build. Whatever it is, it is a real honor to share this beautiful MK1 Rabbit with you. You are in for a huge surprise if you think a extremely clean exterior and proper stance is all this thing has going for it! Scroll down for more!"

ABT introduces 240-HP tuned VW Beetle

Maybe you want a Volkswagen Beetle that does more than merely get noticed. Maybe you want a Beetle that... provokes. If so, you need to give German tuner ABT Sportsline a call.

Tweaks are made to the 2.0-liter turbo that adds 40 horsepower. A front spoiler, wheels anywhere from 18 to 20 inches, and oval tailpipes boost the aggression. Headlight covers make it look mean, and the "carbon-look deco set" with red trim makes it unforgettable.

The result is the Beetle Limousine 5CO, and if you're a configurating kind of guy, then ABT will let you toy around with options."

Exotic car rental company owner uses GPS to thwart international auto theft ring

"Watching television news can be depressing. Between the political rancor of election season and the "if it bleeds, it leads" mentality of most news directors, positive stories are scarce. But here's one that should make any lover of fine automobiles pleased.

The story, as reported by CBS This Morning, starts when the owner of a Los Angeles-based rental car company that specializes in exotics and luxury cars noticed that one of his vehicles was uncharacteristically sitting still for a few days after being rented. The $2,000-per-day 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia was equipped with a GPS tracking system, and the Italian Stallion's lack of use made Eric Blumberg suspicious. So he notified the police, who eventually found the car - in Hong Kong. It had been shipped through the port of Los Angeles, labeled as "used fitness equipment," according to the Los Angeles Times.

It seems that the would-be joyrider who had "rented" the Ferrari was part of an international crime syndicate worthy of a screenplay, according to the CBS report. When the police investigated further, they found between 15 and 20 other vehicles that were being loaded into shipping containers and exported to Asia, a total of 1.5 million worth of four-wheeled loot.

The investigators told CBS that the vehicles can command up to twice their value overseas. While no arrests have yet been made in the case, at least these cars now have a chance of being returned to their rightful owners."

Anonymous Takes Down Formula1.com

The group of hackers known as Anonymous issued a press release last night announcing their intent to hack and take down the official website for Formula One at formulaone.com for the duration of the Bahrain Grand Prix. Their reason? To protest the increasingly violent crackdown on the people of Bahrain by their own government.

formualone.com was shut down as promised and another website, F1-racers.net, is displaying a message from Anonymous that claims responsibility.

In its press release, Anonymous addresses Bernie Eccelstone, president and CEO of Formula One, directly, promising the following.

Anonymous will turn your web site (www.formula1.com) into a smoking crater in cyber space. We will also jam your phone lines, bomb your E-Mail inboxes - and wreck anything else of yours we can find on the internet.

The group also calls upon fans of F1 to ignore the race by either not attending in person or watching it on television. They also appeal to the drivers themselves to protest the race by not crossing the starting line at the beginning of the race.

Last year's Bahrain Grand Prix was cancelled due to civil unrest, and despite the increasing frequency of protests and severity of their crackdown leading up to this weekend's race, it has not yet been cancelled. As a result, activists, now including the Anonymous group, are using the motorsport's worldwide popularity to gain attention for their cause.

MOTOGP - OFFICIAL: Audi buys Ducati

Audi, part of the VW Group, officially confirms that it has acquired Ducati

The full statement from Audi announcing its acquisition of Ducati can be seen below.

No price is given, but previous reports from the financial media suggested Audi would pay 'around' 860 million euros ($1.12 billion).

The cash-rich VW Group already owns car brands Audi, Lamborghini, Skoda, Seat, Bentley, and Bugatti, plus the MAN and Scania truck brands...

'Audi AG is acquiring from Investindustrial Group the tradition-steeped Italian sports motorcycle manufacturer Ducati Motor Holding S.P.A. which has its registered office in Bologna. The transaction will be completed as quickly as possible once authorized by the competition authorities.

'The Supervisory Boards of Audi AG and Volkswagen AG approved the acquisition today in hamburg. Ducati is known worldwide as a leading brand in motorcycle manufacture, with outstanding expertise in engine development and lightweight construction.

'Alongside the traditional Italian brands Lamborghini and Italdesign, Ducati is now a third pillar for AUDI AG in Northern Italy. Another building block in the Company's growth strategy thus falls into place.

'Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG, declared: "Ducati is known worldwide as a premium brand among motorcycle manufacturers and has a long tradition of building sporty motorcycles. It has great expertise in high-performance engines and lightweight construction, and is one of the world's most profitable motorcycle manufactures. That makes Ducati an excellent fit for audi."

'The progressive control systems and special combustion chamber process of Ducati engines, their resulting sporty character, and Ducati's extensive know-how in lightweight construction thus offer great potential for Audi AG and the Volkswagen Group.

'Peter Mosch, Chairman of the General works Council of Audi AG, explains that the employee representatives of Audi AG support the Company's sustainable, co determined growth strategy.

"We must use the opportunities offered by globalization for Audi - and that's exactly what we're doing. Everyone at Audi is looking forward to working with our new colleagues from Ducati," commented Mosch.

'Ducati is a globally active company and has manufacturing operations at its headquarters in Bologna and at its own factory in Thailand. It maintains a series of importer companies in strategic markets.

'Experts predict that the motorcycle market will enjoy strong growth over the next few years, especially in Asia. In 2011, Ducati sold around 42,000 motorcycles and generated revenue of some € 480 million, employing around 1,100 people.

'The company was founded by Adriano and Marcello Ducati in Bologna in 1926. Known originally as Societå Scientifica Radiobrevetti Ducati, it initially built parts for radios. It ventured into the manufacture of motorcycles in 1949.

'Ducati has been actively involved in motorcycle racing for many decades through its racing division Ducati Corse.

'Its racing activities are currently focused on the Ducati official factory team in the MotoGP class of the Motorcycle world championship and in the Super bike World Championship, supporting competitive private teams.

'Ducati won the manufacturers' championship in this latter class 17 times in 21 championships and the pilots' 14 times.'

1996 Honda Civic DX - Extraordinary

My favorite honda, the civic ek. What a beautiful car. It's sporting a K20a swap and it's supercharged! OEM ITR LSD transmission with a stage 4 clutch. Got to give props to the owner Jonathan Walsh. This build is quite simply greater than the sum of its parts. And that is extraordinary.

CR-Z sales not looking to good

CRZ sales have been selling rather badly since may last year when 1557 units sold that month.

Here is how the numbers look:

June 966 units sold

July 878 units sold

August 745 units sold

September 537 units sold

October 289 units sold

December 500 units sold

January 363 units sold

The Insight is in the same boat, with just 492 units sold in october.

I wonder how long Honda will keep selling these two cars or what changes they may make to them.

Personally I would like to see a k20 dropped into the CR-Z. It's the Honda Civic SI motor (K20).
